Benefits to sign girls up for sports

Girls and women who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and lower levels of depression.
Girls and women who play sports have a more positive body image and experience higher states of psychological well-being than girls and women who do not play sports.

History

Girls In The Game launched in 2021 as an extension of the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s United for Girls initiative to address the lack of participation and high dropout rates among girls in sports. The program aims to create more opportunities for girls to play and women coach-mentors to guide and inspire them.

In our Buffalo and Lackawanna communities, we noticed a core group of girls sitting on the sidelines watching their brothers play in our co-ed Soccer for Success program. It became clear there was a need for a safe, inclusive space for girls to play, especially in areas with significant Muslim populations.

Highlights

Since it’s inception, 734 girls have participated
Began virtually during COVID, moved to a park in Lackawanna in 2022, and now expanded to an additional park in Buffalo in 2025
To date, approximately 600 sports bras and 300 performance hijabs have been distributed
